Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and Olympic sport developed from a number of ancient Korean arts many thousands of years old. The name Taekwondo translates Way of Hands and Feet. In 1955, the name Taekwondo was officially adopted as the name for the martial art.

The Irish Taekwondo Union are the National Governing Body for WTF Style Taekwondo in Ireland. The aims of the ITU are to promote and develop Taekwondo throughout Ireland.

World Taekwondo Federation

On the 28th of May 1973 The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) was formed and now has a membership of 205 counties worldwide. The WTF is the International Federation governing the sport of Taekwondo and is a member of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations. The WTF recognizes national Taekwondo governing bodies recognized by the National Olympic Committees in the pertinent country as its members. Taekwondo became an official medal event in the Olympic Games in Sydney 2000.

European Taekwondo Union

ETU

The European Taekwondo Union is the official governing body of all WTF Taekwondo members in Europe. It consists of the National Taekwondo Federations of all European member nations and regulates all Taekwondo members on a continental basis.

Sport Taekwondo Ireland
are members of The Irish Taekwondo Union (ITU), the governing body for The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Olympic Taekwondo in Ireland.

 

We have some of the most experienced Taekwondo instructors in Ireland teaching the Olympic Sport and Korean Martial Art of Taekwondo. All our instructors are registered black belts with the WTF the world governing body for Olympic Taekwondo. With our experienced team of Taekwondo instructors and coaches we offer the highest standard of training in both traditional Taekwondo and competition (Olympic Taekwondo) sparring. The minimum age to join is five years and we cater for children and adults from beginner to experienced level.

Sport Taekwondo Academy

 

As part of the Irish Taekwondo Union 2014-2016 strategic plan to provide player development pathways, from grass roots to elite level a number of Taekwondo Academies were established. The Sport Taekwondo Academy is one of these and is open to all Taekwondo Players who have a serious interest in competing at the highest level in international Taekwondo Competition.
